One door closes…

Far from being the end, redundancy – even in a recession as unpredictable as this one – can be the spur to fresh opportunities.

There’s no doubt that to lose a job, often in unexpected circumstances, presents problems. No matter the size of the package, a lifestyle change and withdrawal of the comfort-zone is a major setback. It’s recognised as a form of bereavement.

Job-search becomes the next career, albeit a temporary one.

But the odds on finding quickly another fulfilling post are vastly enhanced with counselling, designed to bring out the positives by experts skilled in the techniques necessary to secure that next step.

Determination to use redundancy as a motivator; the need to review skills, knowledge and experience prompts an active search and assessment of the job market in the preferred sector and the flexibility to consider a change of direction.

Think about what you’ve done and where you’ve been in your working life and you’ll realise you have lots to offer.

Many have welcomed redundancy as the confidence-builder to go it alone; to set up their own business or consultancy.

Focus for Change has a long and successful track-record in making change happen.

… opening wide, the door of opportunity is always unlocked to those prepared to give it a push….

Time for Change...

Summer finds us reconsidering decisions put on hold...

One of them might concern retirement .

That major lifestyle change is viewed by many with trepidation; one delegate on a Focus for Change in-house seminar confessed he had feared retirement as a black hole about to swallow him up, along with his career, identity and choice.  Now he felt much more positive and relished the opportunities requiring decisions on what he really wanted from the future - and started to plan.

Retirement was always regarded as just sorting out the money and finding something to pass the time.  The reality today is the wider choice - to study something that's always beckoned but neglected by the demands of the job; to continue working or perhaps something different.  There's the chance to learn a musical instrument, another language or contributing skills or expertise as a way of putting something back into the community. Starting a new business or consultancy is an exciting choice made by many launching a new and rewarding lifestyle.

But this new phase of life requires time to plan.  And whether single or partnered your first step should be to book a place on your organisation's retirment planning workshop.

No workshop?  Consider then our open programme dates.  We run retirement planning workshops in-house for public and private sector organisations, local authorities, the professions and universities.

Retirement today is a big opportunity.  You need to take time to plan what you - or both of you - want from this most exciting of challenges.

Reversing the Trend

Life is becoming more stressful by the day...

  • is absenteeism eating into diminishing budgets?
  • is absenteeism affecting staff morale?
  • has staff turnover increased over the past five years?
  • is it difficult to attract the right people?
  • When you do, are they leaving after costly training?

Steadily reducing staff and restricted budgets sit uncomfortably with an ever-increasing workload and new demands, all undermining the structure designed to support an effective public service.

Pressures on senior management cascade down to a workforce required to master the fresh challenges presented by technology and a diverse multi-cultural society.

The need to achieve these objectives all too frequently results in task overload, inevitably producing stress in the workplace and absenteeism that creates a vicious and debilitating circle of inefficiency, falling morale and spiralling costs.

Training can reverse this trend.

At Focus for Change we have a track record of developing workshops to meet the demands of major organisations, the professions and the public sector including local authorities, police and fire services. We work with twenty universities and a number of charities.

Interactive workshops developed specifically to satisfy the training needs of clients are led by experienced and well-qualified trainers in the areas of

  • management and leadership
  • stress
  • motivation and
  • lifestyle balance

prove to be effective in improving efficiency and reducing absenteeism.
